So how much does internet service really cost in Nigeria. The country currently has the highest number of internet users in Africa after dwarfing countries like Egypt, Morocco and South Africa. Aside from the mobile internet which has increased due to the inflow of foreign investment into the telecoms sector, there is also a growing broadband usage by public internet cafes and corporate firms.
With the way the growing young population is accepting these newer forms of technology, you would agree that the internet has come to stay and become a part of Nigeria's future.
Public internet cafes also called cybercafes is a booming business in Nigeria and is mostly patronized by young people who could be WAEC candidates, Jambites or Job seekers.
Is the internet service cheap? Not really but cybercafes are more cheap while at the same time providing an opportunity for people to meet friends and peers.
The cost of using an internet service at a public cafe in Nigeria costs as low as N150/hr which is about $1 per hour.
The cost of using mobile internet service from your phone in Nigeria costs around N150 per MB which is also at about a $1 per MB.
The cost of getting a private internet service from companies like Starcomms or Visafone costs about N16,000 a month although they have other plans based on usage or time limits but the 1 month plan mostly offers unlimited uploads and downloads.
GSM companies in Nigeria like MTN, Glo, Airtel and Etisalat also offer 1 month internet plan besides their mobile plans but they come mostly with limited downloads of about 6gb. The monthly plan from those companies are as high as N10,000 a month but it is limited to about 6gb.
