Nigeria's economy and standard or living is improving and so is the number of fat people. The main problem is that people now tend to eat more but exercise less. Being obese is not a cool thing as it can lead to a whole lot of health problems which ultimately reduces the life span of the person. Learning how to lose weight and stay healthy can help you to live a normal healthy life in Nigeria.

Here are some ten tips for losing weight in Nigeria:

1. Join a Gym:
Joining a gym is mostly advisable for people who need a routine form of exercising on a regular basis. You will need to exercise to the extent where you start sweating. This is most especially recommended if you are mostly busy working and hardly have time for exercising. It can also help you avoid early heart problems which is on the increase now in Nigeria. You could join a gym class of just register with a gym that allows you to use some of their machines to exercise. You could also do some walking or running at stadiums or public places around you.

2. Reduce your meal intake:
If you normally eat 2 wraps of garri or akpu, then it's time to eat only one. If you normally eat a full plate of rice, then you can do better by reducing it by half. If you are weighing about 100kg and want to go to 70kg, then simply reduce how much food you take by 30%.

3. Have more rest:
Over working yourself may give you eating and sleeping disorders which ends up making you eat more than you really need. It's much easier to lose weight if you rest when you are tired. Resting or sleeping would then help you reduce your daily food intake. Don't overwork yourself only to come back too hungry, over eating and then crashing into bed. Work less, eat less and rest more, that's the key.

4. Drink more water:
Water is a very nourishing element helpful for human existence. Our human body need water for digesting and for better functioning of our organs. It is the secret even for longevity and good health. The more water you drink, the more healthy you will be as more toxins would be taken away from your body. Drinking water helps your body to make better use of the food it receives as digestion becomes optimized.

5. Fast:
In Nigeria, fasting is acceptable, being a religious nation and if you tell your family you want to go without food for a while, they will understand. You can survive on a meal per day but you shouldn't push it. Try to go spiritual too when fasting and don't overwork yourself. Have more rest and meditation.

6. Avoid snacks rather eat fruits and nuts:
A lot of people are simply fat just because they eat a couple of snacks before their main meals. If you want to lose weight, one of the first places you should cut off is your snacks. You can do better by eating local fruits like mangoes, bananas, udara, pear, oranges and so on.

7. Eat more beans:
It's simple, if you have more muscle, you'd hardly have fat so building some muscle would reduce the amount of fat in your body and you can do this by eating healthy cooked beans. Eat beans served with rice or other food but with little oil.

8. Eat light dinner:
Most of the weight people gain normally happen overnight while you sleep. This is common for people who are mostly busy working only ending up at home late and feeling so hungry that they eat a lot, even more than their body needs. This is more common among working Nigerian women than men and in big cities like Lagos and Abuja. If you feel the need to satisfy yourself as a result of super hunger, try drinking some water first and I don't mean soft drinks. You may also eat some fruits but go light on dinner or you can eat more bananas or boiled groundnuts.

9. Drink water before and after your meal:
Try to make this a habit and it will help you stop feeling the need to over eat. Try taking a glass of water before eating your meal and you will be more satisfied after eating. If you still feel hungry after eating, try drinking water after your meal. If you still feel hungry after that, eat some fruits.

10. Rest your car, rather walk:
You can also lose weight by ditching your car at home and going to work or anywhere you usually go but with your feet. Try boarding a bus at bus stops and avoid hiring motorcycle or tricycle operators. This can help you lose weight and all you have to do is walk to the bus stop whenever you want to go anywhere you usually go to.

If you still find it hard to lose weight after doing all these, you can try going for some intensive exercise program.
